City of Glen Cove Awarded Funding for New Master Plan

December 22, 2021

The City of Glen Cove announced receiving a grant for PlanGC: Master Plan for the City of Glen Cove

New York State has awarded $150,000 in funding to the City of Glen Cove for a new Master Plan through Round XI of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The City will prepare a new Comprehensive Plan—PlanGC—that is the blueprint for a stronger, brighter Glen Cove future. The plan will guide the City’s investment, development, and growth over the next decade.

The State award to the City of Glen Cove includes $100,000 in grant funding from New York State Department of State through the Smart Growth Comprehensive Planning Program and $50,000 in grant funding from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through the Climate Smart Communities Program.

The grant application for PlanGC was prepared by the Glen Cove Community Development Agency (GCCDA). Mayor of Glen Cove and Chairman of the GCCDA, Timothy Tenke, is thrilled by the award, stating, “The City’s current Master Plan is nearly 12 years old and ready for an update. PlanGC will allow the Glen Cove community to evaluate current development trends and to plan for smart growth into the City’s future.” Ann Fangmann, AICP, Executive Director of the CDA, is “excited for the opportunity to embark on this collaborative planning journey, engaging broadly with City stakeholders and residents, alongside Jocelyn Wenk, AICP, preparer of the funding request.”

PlanGC will account for the multitude of changes that have occurred in recent years in the City of Glen Cove, including large-scale redevelopment in the Downtown and Waterfront areas, and for current trends such as commercial real estate market changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is heightened urgency to prepare for the impacts of climate change in Glen Cove, a coastal community with 10 miles of shoreline. The new Master Plan will also enable the City to tackle critical local issues such as drinking water.

PlanGC will also develop growth strategies for Glen Cove that foster recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic; reinvigorate the retail/commercial sector; produce a new generation of sustainable, well-paying jobs; facilitate access to high-quality childcare; stimulate vibrant community life; enhance parks, historic places, and arts venues and organizations; integrate Smart Growth principles; and rebuild and expand infrastructure to revitalize downtown Glen Cove and areas near transit.
