NASSAU COUNTY RACCOON RABIES BAITING ALERT September 22–25

NASSAU COUNTY RACCOON RABIES BAITING ALERT
September 22–25

As part of Nassau County’s Fall 2026 Oral Rabies Vaccination Program, County program personnel will distribute vaccine bait in Glen Cove and throughout the North Region from Tuesday, September 22 through Friday, September 25. Dates are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Residents may see personnel traveling in slow-moving trucks and hand tossing individual baits along roads, trails and other areas frequented by raccoons. The bait is not being sprayed. Each vaccine packet is placed by hand so raccoons can find and eat it.

The attached photo shows what the bait looks like. Please do not disturb the bait, and advise children not to touch it. Keep dogs and cats indoors or on leashes during the distribution and for approximately one week afterward.

If you touch a bait, wash your hands immediately and contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Sick or unusually acting mammals should be reported to the Nassau County Department of Health at 516-227-9663.

Additional information is available from the Nassau County Department of Health.
