Glen Cove Unanimously Adopts Veterans Real Property Tax Exemption
At its February 24 meeting, the Glen Cove City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 8A, establishing a veterans real property tax exemption as permitted under Section 458-a(11) of the New York State Real Property Tax Law. The resolution was proposed by Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck and adopted unanimously by the City Council.
The measure provides a full exemption from City property taxes and applicable City special district charges for the primary residence of qualifying severely disabled veterans.
“This action reflects Glen Cove’s deep respect and gratitude for the men and women who have sacrificed for our country,” said Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck. “We are proud to stand behind our veterans and provide meaningful support to those who have given so much.”
To qualify, a veteran must have been discharged under qualifying conditions and be permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service. The veteran must be rated 100% disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, classified as individually unemployable by the VA and must also meet federal housing assistance eligibility requirements related to specially adapted housing.
The exemption applies to City property taxes only. City and school taxes are separate, and this measure does not affect school district or county taxes.
